OWN IT Homes

With Tāmaki Regeneration

Whāia te ara o ngā tūpuna, hei tapuwae mōu

OWN IT is the shared home ownership programme supporting whānau to step into their place in Tāmaki.

We know that buying your first home is a massive step, and it’s not without barriers. But the feeling of putting your key in the door, and taking that first step into your new place makes it all worth it.

Stepping into your place isn’t just about entering your new house. It’s about stepping into your community. Hei tūrangawaewae, hei pou whenua mōu. Your place in the world.

Delivered by the Tāmaki Regeneration Programme, OWN IT is connecting whānau with a Tāmaki connection with 1,500 new homes across Glen Innes, Point England and Panmure. From two bedroom apartments to large standalone homes - there’s a whare for every kind of whānau. OWN IT is for whānau with a connection to Tāmaki – whether you currently live here or not.

STEP 1: REGISTER YOUR INTEREST

Whether you’re ready to step into your place, or just curious about whether OWN IT is for you – the first step is to register your interest. We’ll let you know straight away whether you’re eligible for the programme.

Our free, no obligation form takes less than five minutes to fill out.

STEP 2: BEGIN APPLICATION PROCESS

We’ll be in contact to get you started on the formal application process. This is where you enter the OWN IT pipeline.

You’ll be invited to attend our free workshops and info sessions. This is where you can learn more about OWN IT, what shared ownership is and we can learn more about you and the needs of your whānau.

STEP 3: GET MORTGAGE READY

The next step is to work with our team to become mortgage ready.

It takes two years on average for people who join OWN IT to get ready to buy a home. With more OWN IT homes being built in the next two to ten years, now is the time to take action.

STEP 4: STEP INTO YOUR PLACE

Once you’re mortgage ready and approved, the next step is to officially step into your place as a homeowner. You’ll be matched with a home that best suits you and your whānau.

"BEING A HOMEOWNER IS AMAZING; TO KNOW YOUR MONEY IS GOING TOWARDS YOUR FUTURE."

Toko and Rose stepped into their place with OWN IT in 2015. Now they own a  four-bedroom home where they live with their four children. Rose says that being in the programme taught them, step by step, what they needed to do to become mortgage ready, including how to save for a deposit and reduce their debt. Toko says that as a father and a husband, buying a home is one of the things he is most proud of.

STEP INTO SHARED HOME OWNERSHIP

As a rule of thumb, affordability means households pay no more than one-third of their gross household income towards housing costs. According to Canstar (2023) the average Auckland whānau would need to earn more than $218,000 combined to afford mortgage repayments on the median Auckland home. That’s after saving for a 20% deposit without support.

Through our Co-OWN IT and Multi-Generational pathways, home ownership is possible for whānau with combined household incomes from $85,000- $205,000.

STEP INTO TĀMAKI

When you take the steps to own a home through OWN IT, you’re laying down your roots. So yourself, your whānau, and generations to follow will have their akaaka firmly planted in Tāmaki. Strong roots = stability, alignment, and resilience.

OWN IT whānau love having their roots in Tāmaki. This proud, diverse community has a rich local business hub, green open spaces, a range of schools, and convenient transport options. It’s down by the coast, and just 12 minutes from the CBD.

“IT FEELS LOVELY TO COME HOME FROM WORK EVERY DAY AND KNOW THAT THE HOUSE IS YOURS.”

Aroha was raised in Glen Innes and her Mum, Whaea Esther Hunt, was the founder of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Puau Te Moananui a Kiwa. Aroha loves having a home in a community she has deep connections with, and is proud to have laid down roots for her tamariki. She says working with OWN IT to become mortgage-ready has given a real boost to her confidence and self-belief.

"I'M REALLY PROUD THAT I WAS ABLE TO SAVE AND BUY A HOME FOR MY KIDS."

Mārena never thought she would be a homeowner as a single mum of two. But after her sister introduced her to OWN IT and Mārena began the programme, she was able to buy her own 3 bedroom home in Glen Innes. Now Mārena says she loves raising her sons in the Tāmaki community, and she loves the autonomy that comes with being a homeowner. This is how Mārena stepped into her place.

“One of the major things that has changed with being a homeowner is giving security to my family, to my boys. It’s given me huge financial literacy that I can pass on to my children. It has changed my thinking, not just by being a homeowner but I’m here in the community to stay and raise my family.”

Ready to Own IT?

It’s normal for whānau to start their OWN IT journey with debt or no savings.

OWN IT helps to remove the hurdles of home buying, so Tāmaki residents and tangata whenua can courageously and confidently - step into their place.

The stability, community, and pride that comes through home ownership can sometimes feel like a distant horizon, but the OWN IT programme will help you get there. Every journey to a distant horizon begins with a single step.

You don’t need to have it all worked out. You just have to get started.
