Pathways to Housing Independence

Getting ready to buy an affordable home in Tāmaki

Everyone’s housing situation is different. For some people, state housing might be right for them longer term. Other people might want to move from a rental to owning their own home. Others might want to progress from a state house to eventually owning their own home. We want to help local families who want to move along the housing ladder get to where they want to be.

Our Pathways to Housing Independence programme is for anyone who would like to move along the housing ladder, whichever stage they’re at. Doing the programme will help you get ready to buy one of our affordable homes, like a Rent to Buy home or a Shared Ownership home.

The programme includes:

  • Workshops on managing money (delivered in partnership with Sorted)
  • Advice on financial planning and budgeting
  • Information about the types of affordable housing available to Tāmaki locals
  • Advice about the financial help available to first home buyers (for example, the First Home Grant and the First Home Loan)
  • One-on-one mentoring to help prepare to apply for a mortgage
