New home for young couple
Local Tāmaki gym teacher Esther Fifita and her husband Alipate, an apprentice electrician, moved into their new home on Monday, along with their one-year-old daughter Alessia. Seven Sharp were there to capture their first impressions.
The couple, who are in their late twenties, are the fifth to move into a home as part of Tāmaki Regeneration Company’s (TRC’s) new Shared Home Ownership programme.
TRC is working with partners, including NZ Housing Foundation, Sorted and local providers to help Tāmaki whānau achieve their home ownership aspirations and advance their economic independence and overall wellbeing.
“We actually quite often deliver to first generation homeowners, and that means that a lot of our Māori and our Pacific and our state housing tenants actually have the opportunity to achieve their home ownership dreams,” says Shelley Katae, TRC’s Strategy and Performance General Manager.
Whānau accepted into the shared ownership programme purchase approximately 70% of their home, and TRC owns the remaining one third of the house. Over time, whanau increase their proportion of ownership in their home by buying TRC’s share back.
