INTRODUCING THE LEGENDARY CHRIS MAKOARE
Chris Makoare is an inspirational Tāmaki local, born and raised in Glen Innes. His uniquely personal story is about change, possibility and the extraordinary power of helping others to do the same.
Chris and his younger siblings were raised mainly by their 18 year old sister. When he was young, Chris got on the wrong side of the law and spent time in a juvenile detention centre. Chris talked to us recently, about a defining moment in his 30’s, when he was drinking too much and smoking marijauna, when he realised that he needed to change. He now sees this challenging time in his life with clarity and compassion, and uses it to help others avoid going down a similar path. Since then, Chris hasn't looked back.
Now in his 60’s, Chris helps deliver food parcels to those who need them, is an involved grandparent, is on the board of the Maungakiekie Tamaki Local Board, volunteers at Auckland City Mission, and runs the Glen Innes Family Centre where, among other things, he leads a support group for father’s and their tāmariki.
In his amazing mahi with Tāmaki fathers, Chris focuses on giving whānau connecting and positive experiences - experiences that through circumstance, they wouldn't usually have the resources to access. On top of weekly groups, Chris arranges and facilitates fishing trips and fun days out for dad’s and their kids.
Many people from Tāmaki may also recognise Chris from local community events - where he manages a group of volunteers under Tamaki Community Patrols, who are present to de-escalate conflict in a healthy, and culturally supportive way.
Over and above everything else, Chris believes in the power of sharing real, lived stories and experiences. A special mihi to Chris for sharing his story with us, and for all his incredible work in the community.
