Frequently asked questions

Can Tāmaki Regeneration Company help me buy the home I currently rent in Tāmaki?

No - we don’t sell our existing state homes, and we can’t help you buy a house you’re renting privately. If your application Rent-to-Own or Co-Own It is successful, we will match you with one of our new homes in Tāmaki. We will work with you to find a new home that suits your whānau’s needs.

What is the application process for Co-Own It homes? How long does the process take?

The time it takes from applying for a Co-Own It home to moving in will depend on the size of the house you need and how close you are to being ‘mortgage-ready’.

What is the income criteria for Co-Own It homes? Why does my income fall outside the income criteria bands?

To qualify for a Co-Own It home, you must have a total household income of around $85,000 - $130,000 per year (before tax). This is the income level needed so that mortgage payments are affordable. If you earn less than $85,000, and you’re working, you can apply for a Rent-to-Own home while you work to save a deposit and get mortgage-ready.

What do you mean by having a “Tāmaki Connection”?

Having a Tāmaki connection includes living, working or having whakapapa to the area. This could also mean having connections to Tāmaki through your marae, school or church. It can also mean someone who used to live in Tāmaki and who would like to return.

Am I too old to buy a Co-Own It home?

Because banks assume most people will take 25-30 years to pay off their mortgage, they might be less likely to give you a mortgage if you are older. It can depend on the bank you are working with and your general situation. We can help you look at your options. It can also help if you are able to buy the house together with any adult children you have. We can work with you to organise this as well.
